Treating Symptoms of POTS and Dysautonomias with Chiropractic Neurology

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and other autonomic nervous system disorders provoke a wide range of symptoms that interfere with so many parts of everyday life. Pinning down the causes behind a confusing constellation of symptoms is often a multi-year process, and even then, patients often hear that their symptoms are simply a fact of life. For example, we hear from many patients who get an accurate diagnosis from a cardiologist, but are left to manage symptoms on their own, as these nervous system disorders don’t originate with the heart.

But because POTS and other dysautonomias are nervous system disorders, functional neurology can help target the source of troubling symptoms and provide long-term relief. Our thorough evaluation reveals connections and symptom sources that typical exams and scans often miss, and helps us create specific, targeted treatment plans that help to alleviate the symptoms of POTS and other dysautonomias.

Our Evaluation

Many patients call our evaluation the most thorough they’ve ever had!

Dr. Beckwith will walk through a detailed health history with you, and assess your current health status based on the principles of chiropractic neurology. Finding the source of symptoms is often tied in to the way your brain and body communicate. Factors like balance, reflexes, eye movements, responsiveness, and much more can give Dr. Beckwith deep insight into how your brain and body are working together — or struggling.

In the case of POTS and other autonomic nervous system disorders, we often look at your heart rate in a variety of situations. Does it change as you sit or stand? Does it spike and then settle? These changes over time give us insight into how the vestibular and autonomic systems are responding, and often vary between patients with similar conditions. Understanding how each individual’s symptoms present themselves can be key to identifying effective treatments.

This evaluation will be the basis of a treatment plan designed to help you manage symptoms and bring lasting relief.

Common Symptoms of POTS & Dysautonomias

As a chiropractic neurologist, Dr. Beckwith frequently sees patients with POTS and other autonomic nervous system disorders. In many cases, they’ve seen multiple doctors and undergone numerous scans, all of which say that their heart, or head, or stomach are fine — they just have POTS. This is great insight to rule out other conditions, but it offers little relief from common symptoms like:

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue

  • Palpitations

  • Headaches

  • Brain fog

  • Poor circulation (cold, tingling, and numbness)

  • Digestive issues

  • Exercise intolerance

  • Difficulty being upright or standing for longer periods

  • Poor balance

  • Fainting

Treating Symptoms of POTS with Chiropractic Neurology

POTS can cause upheaval in your day-to-day life, but chiropractic neurology helps us find ways to ease symptoms. The results of your evaluation will guide your treatment plan. For example, an interruption in your reflexes may give us insight into exactly where in your vestibular system disruption has occurred, as well as which treatments might be most effective for you.

Based on your evaluation, Dr. Beckwith will develop a treatment plan that addresses the root cause of symptoms of POTS and other dysautonomias. Our treatment is gentle and targeted, working with your body rather than against it to help relieve symptoms. Much like physical therapy for injured muscles, we use treatment practices that help strengthen and support (and sometimes inhibit) parts of your nervous system that are causing symptoms. This can include targeted adjustments to the neck and spine, but just as often involves sensory stimulation, balance work, and other specially-tailored exercises that help reset the connection between your brain and body. It is important to note that POTS patients are often not good candidates for the typical “crunchy” neck adjustments many chiropractors use.

When treating the symptoms of autonomic nervous system disorders with chiropractic neurology, Dr. Beckwith often employs techniques like:

  • Certain types of eye movements in certain speeds and directions

  • Combined eye-head strategies

  • Passive or active complex body movements

  • Inner ear strategies, targeting either the gravitational or rotational circuitry of the inner ear

  • Sensory strategies targeting the autonomic nervous system, including the vagus nerve and/or the fight-or-flight responses

  • Cognitive activities

  • Spatial sensorimotor strategies

These techniques help to address problems in the nervous system, and bring patients lasting relief from the symptoms caused by POTS and other dysautonomias.
