Treating Vertigo & Dizziness with Chiropractic Neurology

Vertigo and dizziness are destabilizing symptoms that can have a range of causes. Ultimately, there is a disconnect between the body and nervous system, and chiropractic neurology is uniquely suited to help bridge this gap and bring patients lasting relief from symptoms of vertigo and dizziness from a variety of root causes.

Our Evaluation

Many patients call our evaluation the most thorough they’ve ever had!

Dr. Beckwith will walk through a detailed health history with you, and assess your current health status based on the principles of chiropractic neurology. Factors like balance, reflexes, responsiveness, and more can give Dr. Beckwith deep insight into how your brain and body are working together — or struggling. Especially with issues like vertigo and dizziness, your balance and reflexes can tell a story about the root cause of your symptoms, whether they stem from the inner ear, migraines, concussions, and more.

This evaluation will be the basis of a treatment plan designed to help you manage symptoms and bring lasting relief.

Symptoms and Causes of Vertigo & Dizziness

As a chiropractic neurologist, Dr. Beckwith frequently sees patients whose dizziness or vertigo are part of a larger constellation of symptoms. Vertigo is more than just a spinning sensation, it can present in different ways and have different effects on different people. Chiropractic neurology helps our practice find the root cause of your dizziness or vertigo from a wide variety of conditions.

Common Symptoms We Treat

  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling “off”

  • Vertigo (“spinning” sensations)

  • Nausea

  • Balance problems

Causes We See Often

  • Concussion, post-concussion syndrome

  • BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo)

  • Migraines

  • Inner ear problems

  • Ménière's disease

  • MDDS (mal de barquement syndrome)

  • Dizziness caused by neck problems

Causes of vertigo and dizziness, and the symptoms they cause, are often unique. Especially if you are unsure about the cause of your otherwise-unexplained dizziness or vertigo, our evaluation can make the difference in finding treatment that works.

Treating Vertigo & Dizziness with Chiropractic Neurology

Though they have a variety of causes, these symptoms are tied to the signals the body’s receptors send into the brain, and how the brain process those signals. This makes them excellent candidates for treatment through chiropractic neurology. Your evaluation will help us hone in on the miscalibrations or disconnections causing your symptoms, which helps us plan specific treatment to address them. For example, many patients find that their symptoms affect their balance. Determining how and under what conditions balance is affected can give great insight into where, precisely, your body and nervous system need more support.

Based on your evaluation, Dr. Beckwith will develop a treatment plan that addresses the root cause of symptoms following a concussion. Our treatment is gentle and targeted, working with your body rather than against it to help relieve symptoms. Much like physical therapy for injured muscles, we use treatment practices that help strengthen and support (and sometimes inhibit) parts of your nervous system that are causing symptoms. This can include targeted adjustments to the neck and spine, but just as often involves sensory stimulation, balance work, and other specially-tailored exercises that help reset the connection between your brain and body. It is important to note that vertigo and dizziness patients are often not good candidates for the typical “crunchy” neck adjustments many chiropractors use.

When treating symptoms like vertigo and dizziness with chiropractic neurology, Dr. Beckwith often employs techniques like:

  • Certain types of eye movements in certain speeds and directions

  • Combined eye-head strategies

  • Passive or active complex body movements

  • Inner ear strategies, targeting either the gravitational or rotational circuitry of the inner ear

  • Sensory strategies targeting the autonomic nervous system, including the vagus nerve and/or the fight-or-flight responses

  • Cognitive activities

  • Spatial sensorimotor strategies

These technique help to address problems in the nervous system, and bring patients lasting relief from vertigo and dizziness from a variety of sources.
